Collective cultural nostalgia has influenced fashion and design throughout the years; however, recently a new iconography has begun to emerge. Cultural symbols that were meaningful and iconic to previous generations have become the current generation’s symbol of kitsch. Current generations have been reliant on media and technology, allowing for symbolic icons to be easily diffused and translated into other cultures and generations. According to Bubble-up Theory, coined by Ted Pohlemus, street style, developed by the youth generation, becomes incorporated into high fashion trends, leading to an upward movement in fashion. This research exploration considers how a specific symbolic cultural icon influences other cultures, and how the symbol is appropriated and diffused. In the Mass Exodus (2015) showcase, presented through Ryerson University, these research findings were exhibited through three large scale graphic posters and an interactive online editorial.
““Authentcity and sense of sub cultural identity which is symbolized in street style is lost when it becomes ‘this year’s latest fashion’-something which can be purchased and worn without reference to its orginal sub cultural meaning””
